Forfar Athletic fans were left scratching their heads in disbelief after a fantastic display of football by Dick Campbell’s side was not reflected in the narrow nature of the scoreline.
The Loons were superb against Peterhead, particularly in the first half, but only a Danny Denholm goal just before the interval separated the sides at full-time.
Not that manager Dick Campbell was complaining as another clean sheet was recorded against a side who are always dangerous up front.
“I would say that is as good I have seen us play in the seven or eight years I have been here. I hardly have the words to describe it. It was a big result for us,” he said.
“But games are never won at 1-0 but we deserved it. No goals against and for as poor as we were in the second half, I felt we had the four best chances.
“It is a nice feeling to be sitting joint top of the league after five games. And you have to remember all the players we had missing today. We had a strong bench too.
“But I am not getting carried away. We deserved to win and no one could deny that. Their keeper has had six world class saves today.
“I think there was a bit of nastiness in the game at times but I think the referee handled it.”
Perhaps the only downside to Forfar’s day was that the win should have been far more decisive.
There was virtually oneway traffic in a first half that saw the Loons string together some super football.
Early pressure from the home side saw chances fall to Dale Hilson and Michael Dunlop before Darren Dods saw a powerful header scooped off the line by Peterhead keeper Graeme Smith in the 14th minute.
Forfar could have paid the price for all their possession without an end result.
Rory McAllister burst through one on one with keeper Rab Douglas but was denied by a one-handed block then Jamie Stevenson also forced a save from close range.
Forfar made the breakthrough in the 42nd minute when Gavin Swankie collected a long goal-kick, controlled and crossed for Danny Denholm to hammer a half-volley into the top corner.
Peterhead came more into the game second-half and McAllister rattled the Forfar crossbar with a ferocious 20-yard free-kick.
Smith again saved the Blue Toon with a great double stop to deny Swankie then Derek Young.
