Montrose have received a boost ahead of their historic pyramid play-off games against Highland League outfit Brora Rangers after Links Park boss Paul Hegarty was named League Two Manager of the Month for April.
The former Dundee United legend received his accolade at Tannadice yesterday after his players won twice and drew once last month.
Hegarty took over at Montrose in February following the departure of previous boss George Shields.
And the 60-year-old revealed he did not apply for the job, the club approached him.
He said: “It was a big surprise when I was told I had won the award but the rest of my backroom staff and the players themselves deserve great credit.
“We now face two of the biggest games in Montrose’s history.
“The club actually approached me to become their boss. I didn’t even know at the time that the previous manager George Shields had left the club.
“The chairman Derek Sim had phoned me up and I said, ‘But you still have a manager’.
“He told me that George had left the club so I then spoke to the chairman and the directors. They got back to me the next day and appointed me.
“I knew what I was letting myself in for. I wasn’t blinkered.
“It is great having Angus clubs in the leagues and I want that to continue.”
