Marvin Andrews has thanked the people of Montrose for turning out in big numbers on Saturday to help them triumph in their highly dramatic pyramid play-off final against Brora Rangers.
There were a total of 2,132 supporters inside Links Park to witness the historic edge-of-the-seat occasion with the Gable Endies winning 3-2 on aggregate to ensure their SPFL survival with Andrews netting one of their goals.
The kick-off had to be delayed for 15 minutes to let all the home fans in and the veteran former Trinidad and Tobago international who has also played for a host of clubs including Rangers, Raith Rovers and Forfar, said: “This rates very, very highly in my career.
“I signed for Montrose in January and I never thought this club would have this amount of supporters.
“It was absolutely amazing that the game had to be delayed for Montrose supporters to come in.
“I was really pleased with the support the town has given to the players this afternoon.
“We couldn’t repay them any better than by helping keep the club in the SPFL.”
Montrose boss, former Dundee United legend Paul Hegarty, admitted he was more pleased for the fans than for himself after helping ensure the club did not drop into the Highland League.
The manager said: “The most important thing is there is SPFL football at Montrose next season.
“The fans turned out in big numbers and I am more delighted for them than myself.
“We don’t want to be in this position again.
“I think it is a massive wake-up call and I don’t want this to happen again.”
