Strong defences dominated Cowden’s closing friendly when the Lowland League champions visited Central Park on Saturday.
The gale did nothing to help the respective attacks and, when the strikers did get through, goalkeepers Mike Andrews and Andrew Stobie were in fine form.
Indeed, former Berwick Rangers keeper Andrews has impressed Cowden player-boss Colin Nish in the friendly programme, and he signed him after the match.
Nish has seen his team prepare in four friendly games with an unbeaten record and only one goal conceded, with a 1-0 win against Motherwell under-20s, a 5-0 success against Gala Fairydean Rovers, and draws with Premiership Hearts (1-1) and Saturday’s goalless game, and is quite happy.
The manager was short of a few players for the game against Edinburgh City but his recast side still should have won, with Greig Spence, Dean Brett and Nish all going close. Ross Guthrie had City’s best two chances.
“We knew that City would be a well-organised side with a few players who can really hurt you, so we had to play pretty well in the game. But while we defended excellently we could have looked to do more in an attacking sense,” said Nish.
“With the likes of Mo Yaqub struck down by illness on Saturday, and with Kenny Adamson and Jack Beaumont out injured along with a couple of trialists also unavailable, we had to change things around, but we did reasonably well.
“Now we have to get ourselves ready for the Petrofac Challenge Cup game with Raith, and I would like to think we will have a couple of additions to the squad by then.”
