Raith Rovers 2 Queen of the South 1: Elliot brace is total knockout

Raith striker Calum Elliot recovered from a second half knock-out to hit a match-winning double against Queen of the South.

Elliot was left dazed after taking an arm to the face during the second half, but he recovered to hit an 87th-minute winner as Rovers came from behind to claim the three points.

Sporting a bruised and swollen eye, Elliot said: “To get the goal at the end is pleasing and it puts us back on track. We’ve had a couple of bad results in the last few weeks but we can push on now.

“I’ve taken an arm to the eye and it’s going to be a sore one, but I’ll gladly take it to get a couple of goals and the victory, which is more important.”

Elliot’s brace helped bail out team mate Greig Spence, who was guilty of missing a catalogue of chances before punching the dug-out in frustration when he was replaced with 20 minutes to go.

“Greig’s disappointed, but it’s pleasing that he’s in the positions to miss those chances,” Elliot said. “That’s what he’s all about. He’ll keep getting into those positions and I’m sure he’ll bounce back next week.

“It just shows he cares for the football club and it’s those type of characters you want in the dressing room.”

A poor first half was coming to an end when Spence superbly controlled a high ball to beat the last defender and go through on goal but he took the ball too close to goalkeeper Zander Clark, who was able to make the block.

Spence also should have done better with two free headers early in the second half but, on both occasions, his efforts were too close to Clark, who should have been left with no chance.

Raith keeper Ross Laidlaw was called into action for the first time on the hour mark, diving to his left to push away a Chris Higgins header, but he was left with no chance a few minutes later when Chris Mitchell’s low cross was turned in by the unmarked Gavin Reilly from six yards.

Rovers responded immediately thanks to an opportunistic strike from Elliot, who fired a low right-footed shot across goal and inside the far post from the corner of the 18-yard box.

Queens almost retook the lead in controversial circumstances when, with Rovers expecting to receive the ball back from an uncontested drop ball, the visitors played on, and Reilly fired wide.

Rovers players reacted furiously and the fired-up hosts got the winner with three mintues left when Joe Cardle’s deflected cross was controlled by Elliot 12 yards out and, with his back to goal, he unleashed a shot on the turn which found the bottom corner.

Raith boss Grant Murray was delighted to stop a run of defeats.

“It’s always difficult going behind, but we’ve shown that character before this season,” he said.

“The lads have been disappointed with the last couple of defeats so it was important for us to get back to winning ways.”
