East Fife caretaker manager Gary Naysmith knows full well what victory over Stenhousemuir could do for his chances of securing the job on a permanent basis.
Following Willie Aitchison’s resignation last month, former Scotland defender Naysmith will take charge of the team at Bayview this afternoon and will be hoping to steer the club to just their fourth league win of the season.
And if he achieves that goal, it will surely enhance his chances of becoming East Fife manager permanently.
“I want the job and the chairman knows that I want the job but as long as I can look myself in the mirror after the game and say there’s nothing more I could have done, I will be happy,” he said.
“Stenhousemuir are having quite a good season. Martin Corrigan has got them well organised and looking back on the previous game we had with them, it was a really good point we got.
“Having said that, from our point of view, if we had showed a bit more composure in front of goal we could easily have taken the three points.”
Morale is low in Methil at the moment but Naysmith hopes to turn things around.
He told Courier Sport: “It’s a case of me trying to lift the players because it doesn’t need the Brains of Britain to work out to realise that the players are low on confidence after winning just three matches in 17.
“It will be about me getting round them and trying to give them the belief that they are more than capable of winning games.”
Defender Gary Thom will miss out as he serves the first of his two-game suspension, while midfielder Paul Willis remains sidelined with an ankle problem.
The club have completed a loan deal for Dundee central defender James Thomson, who has captained the reserve side at Dens Park and he is likely to be available for selection.
