He has played over 120 games so far for Raith Rovers and even at the age of 22, can already be considered a battle-hardened player.
However, Ross Callachan insists he is still learning his trade as a footballer and every day “is a school day” for him.
The midfielder was handed his first start last week against Queen of the South since recovering from a freak dislocated shoulder accident in August.
He was delighted to be back in the starting XI but he candidly admits he is far from the finished article and leans on his “teachers” for support such as boss Ray McKinnon as well as team-mate, former Scotland, Dundee United and Hibs player Scott Robertson.
Callachan, who hopes to be involved again tonight at Morton, said: “Scott’s a good role model and a good guy for myself to look up to.
“He’s in the gym every day, he works hard and he’s got a great attitude. He does a lot of the stuff that sometimes fans don’t see on the pitch.
“But when you’re actually playing with him, you appreciate it a lot more.
“Sometimes I have a wee chat with him. Scott’s quite a quiet guy, generally, so I would have to approach him.
“But if you do that, he’ll welcome you with open arms and guide you through the games, really.
“I see a lot of similarities between the way we both play, so he’s great to learn from.
“Every day is a school day. My ears are always open and I’m always listening to the manager and what he’s saying and what he’s telling us to do in training.
“I’m always looking to improve as a player. I don’t think you can ever be the complete player in your career, ever. You can always get better.”
Callachan admitted he had to be patient before making his return to the starting XI after what he describes as the worst injury of his career.
He added: “I’m delighted to be back playing and to have played my first 90 minutes since the injury.
“There’s nothing worse than coming back and not playing. I wanted to be involved right away but that’s not going to happen. I can’t expect just to walk back into the team.
“So, I had to be patient and wait for my time, and it was good to start the game last Friday.
“That’s the worst injury I’ve had in that it’s put me out for the longest.
“It’s the only real long-term injury I’ve had, and hopefully I don’t get many more.”
Morton are on a great run of form just now but Callachan is confident Rovers can go to Greenock and pick up the right result.
He said: “I think you need to go into every game in this league looking to win, at least.
“We nicked a goal in the last minute to win 2-1 against them earlier in the season, so that can give us confidence.
“It was a tough game the last time, though, so we’ll just need to go there and set up the right way.
“It’s a right good pitch there, so we need to get the ball down and pass it, and if we can do that and work hard off the ball then we should get a result.”
