Goals from Martin Grehan and on-loan Rangers midfielder Darren Ramsay gave League Two side Arbroath a narrow Scottish Cup victory over Highland League Brora at Dudgeon Park.
Lichties manager Todd Lumsden said: “It was a tough game and a typical cup tie. It wasn’t the prettiest to watch but we achieved our aim which was to go through.
“In the first half we had to defend against the wind and we did well. It was a good result.
“I said to the players that I didn’t want them using the long journey as an excuse. We got up there early enough that we had something to eat and then warmed-up well.
“We made sure we prepared properly. It was a good goal that won the game a bit of quality.
“It was good to see Darren get on the scoresheet and he’s a talented individual, but we have other players capable of scoring as well.”
Brora were forced into an early change in the 15th minute, striker Paul Brindle going off injured to be replaced by Gavin Morrison.
Seven minutes later a shot from Brora’s Andrew Greig was spilled by Allan Fleming, but he quickly gathered before Zander Sutherland could pounce on the rebound.
The visitors went in front with a penalty on the 28th minute, Grehan slotting the ball past Joe Malin after Jamie Clarke was fouled.
Brora hit back after the break and equalised with a Martin Maclean lob from 25 yards in the 50th minute.
Nine minutes later Arbroath grabbed the winner, Ramsay scoring his second of the season with an unstopp-able effort which flew past Malin in the home goal.
Andrew Greig missed a chance to force a replay when he fired over the crossbar late on, but Arbroath held on to advance to round three.
Montrose face a replay with Lothian Thistle after a 1-1 draw at Saughton and boss Paul Hegarty was not impressed.
Hegarty said: “Our players let themselves down, they weren’t strong enough, weren’t aggressive enough, weren’t sharp enough, weren’t clinical enough and that’s not acceptable.”
