Dunfermline forward Ryan Wallace feels it would be a “tragedy” if the Pars were to throw away second spot in the league from their present position.
The Fife club have been Rangers’ closest challengers for a while now and have opened up an eight point gap between themselves and third-placed Stranraer, albeit the west coast outfit have two games in hand.
Half a dozen more victories should see Dunfermline virtually home and hosed to finish in second and that’s what Wallace and his team-mates are thinking about as they head up to Brechin.
“If we don’t get second place then it’s a bit of tragedy for ourselves to be honest with you because we’ll know we’ve been points in front and we’ve thrown it away,” he told Courier Sport.
“But overall we’re probably the second best team in the league behind Rangers who have spent millions of pounds on their team, so if you look around about we probably play the most stylish football as well.
“We try to get the ball down and play and we score goals, so second place is our aim and that’s where we aim to be at the end of the season.
“Second place and in the play-offs to try and get this club back to where it belongs in the Championship if not higher.”
A loss at home to bottom club Airdrieonians last weekend was not the best preparation for a run of four straight away games, and Wallace concedes it was a below par performance from the team.
He continued: “We were pretty down after last week to be honest with you.
“If you look at the game we weren’t great, and the week before against Stranraer we didn’t play very well either but we managed to scrape the result.
“But last week I didn’t think we really threatened to be honest with you. We kept the ball but even at that we didn’t keep it in the right areas.
“We made mistakes and it’s obviously cost us the game, but now we’re looking to bounce back and get a result away from home. It’s something we’ve been pretty good at doing this season.
“That’s one thing we can always say, we’ve always bounced back after a defeat.
“We’ll head up to Brechin with our heads held high and hopefully we’ll take our chances and get the three points.
“When we last played up at Glebe Park we could have finished the game off in the first 20 or 30 minutes and it would not have had to be 1-1.
“But at the end of the day Brechin are not a bad team and they do what they do well up there. It’s a tight pitch and they work their socks off and try to stop us playing, so I’m sure they’ll make it tough.”
The Pars completed a deal for former Motherwell and Morton centre-half Jonathan Page and he will be available for selection.
Defender Callum Morris is out for two weeks with a hamstring problem and Faissal el Bakhtaoui is suspended, although Kerr Young is back after his ban and Ryan Thomson should be available following injury.
Pars boss Jim Jefferies is looking for his team to bounce back after last week.
“We know we’re in for a hard game but it doesn’t faze us going away from home,” he said. “Away from home teams tend to come out a wee bit more and it suits us because we’re a very good team for passing and breaking quickly and we cause teams a lot of problems. Hopefully that will be the case on Saturday, although it is a tighter pitch and there’s not always a lot of room.
“But I’m sure we’ll be making up for last week and trying to get a result.”
