Raith boss Ray McKinnon is keeping his fingers crossed that a scan will show an injury suffered by Lewis Vaughan is not as bad as first feared.

The 19-year-old opened the scoring for Raith in their 3-0 League Cup win over Albion Rovers at the weekend but then had to be substituted with what was thought to be a serious knee injury.

He had a scan on Monday with McKinnon now nervously awaiting the results.

However, the manager revealed that another player, Lewis Toshney, who was expected to be out for weeks after damaging ankle ligaments at Cowdenbeath two Saturdays ago has started running again, well ahead of schedule.

McKinnon said: “Our physio thinks Lewis popped his kneecap which is a huge blow for him and Raith.

“He has had a scan at a hospital in Edinburgh and we are now awaiting the results. Fingers crossed it is not as serious as we first thought and he will be back sooner rather than later.

“There is better news on Lewis Toshney, though.

“I am absolutely astounded that he managed some jogging at the weekend and today.

“It is amazing considering the state of his ankle after the Cowdenbeath game but he says he is a quick healer.

“Mitch Megginson came on for the last 15 minutes against Albion Rovers and he will play again tonight for the Under-20s at Lochee United.

“However, we will still be without Craig Barr for Saturday’s league game against Livingston while Kyle Benedictus is suspended.

“That is a blow as Kyle has been really good for us since he came in and he scored a fine goal against Albion Rovers at the weekend.”

While McKinnon has not had his troubles to seek in terms of injuries since he left Brechin City to take over at Raith, he admits he is revelling in being a manager at a full-time side.

He added: “I am loving it. It is great coming in every morning and working with the boys.

“They are a good bunch who are keen as mustard.

“I loved it at Brechin and got on really well with the board.

“It is a great club with great people but I had to get up to the next level working full-time.

“This has been perfect and I am thoroughly enjoying it.”
