John Armstrong broke his scoring duck for the season but was in no mood to celebrate after Morton snatched a draw.
Armstrong’s 11th-minute header looked like being enough to see his side open up a 12-point gap over their basement rivals.
But Archie Campbell’s strike five minutes from time gave Morton a point they scarcely deserved. The visitors were also left to rue a stoppage time sitter from Jamie Stevenson.
Armstrong said: “You have to give them credit for the pressure they put us under in the second half but when you lose a goal in the last 10 minutes of a match you’re always pretty disappointed.
“It was definitely an avoidable one. We had enough bodies in the box and Jamie Stevenson missed a tackle that allowed the cross to come in. But it’s a point away from home and you’ve got to take the positives.
“We are potentially looking at the teams above us and we’re trying to put them under pressure.”
Armstrong took a moment to reflect on his goal, adding: “I’m delighted to get on the score-sheet because the gaffer has been trying to get us to score more from set pieces.
“We’ve been working on a few things in training and it’s finally paid off.”
Despite maintaining their advantage over Morton, Central Park boss Jimmy Nicholl admitted this result felt like a defeat.
He said: “It’s a sore one because I thought we were in control. But we just couldn’t hold on at the end. I’m finding it difficult to be angry at the players because they put so much into the game.
“You think on it as two points dropped but we’ve got to look at it as one point closer to Alloa.”
Morton assistant manager David Hopkin said: “We haven’t lost any ground today and we’ll keep working because there’s still a lot of points to play for.”
