Raith Rovers players and fans will have to make the trek to Inverness again on Tuesday night after today’s scheduled Scottish Cup quarter-final between the teams was postponed.
Relentless rain in the Highlands overnight put paid to the eagerly-awaited fixture and left hundreds of Rovers fans many of whom had already started to make the journey north frustrated, while the Kirkcaldy club will also be around £3,000 out of pocket after opting to stay overnight ahead of the game.
Referee Willie Collum decided to call the game off following a 9pm inspection, with a number of areas of the pitch at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium deemed unplayable at that point.
Officials from both clubs felt the game might have gone ahead if the pitch had been worked on and the weather stayed fair, but, with more heavy rain forecast and the travelling distances involved for fans, it was decided to err on the safe side and cancel the game early.
An Inverness club statement said: “As always player safety is paramount to any decision taken but following incessant rain throughout the night, which we had hoped would bypass Inverness and with the impending heavy rain forecast for later today it would be unfair to ask fans of both clubs to travel if the game was at all in doubt.”
Despite Rovers wanting the game played a week today, the quarter-final has been rescheduled for Tuesday March 10 at 7.45pm.
Fans of both clubs who purchased tickets have been asked to retain these for Tuesday night’s game, while anyone who cannot make the rescheduled game should visit the respective club offices on Monday for refunds.
