Cowdenbeath can take great confidence from results against two of the division’s top three heading into their game against Queen of the South, according to boss Jimmy Nicholl.
Nicholl’s return to Central Park has sparked the Blue Brazil into a bit of form and they have bounced back from what could have been a morale-sapping 3-2 home loss to Livingston by not only beating Dundee on their own patch but also snatching a point in last week’s 3-3 derby draw at Raith.
One glance at the Championship table would tell fans of the Fife club just how important today’s home game against Queens could be, and Cowden could move to within a point of the visitors if they can record another victory in front of their home fans.
“We need to keep our passing going throughout the 90 minutes this Saturday for any home game has to be one that we need to win,” he said.
“Queen of the South are a useful side but we have the players who can hurt them and it is an opportunity to get that little bit closer to the pack of clubs above us.”
Nicholl reckons his team were good value for their point against Raith last week and was delighted to see Kane Hemmings’ late leveller go in.
“I thought we played well and we got ourselves into a good position,” he said.
“You come away to another top three team, you’ve settled into the game and played reasonably well and I was pleased with the players.
“Then all of a sudden they get an equaliser and then they go into the lead and all of the things that can worry you do. But we showed a great determination to get back into the game.
“Our use of the ball was horrific in the second half and I was surprised because we are normally better than that.”
The Cowden staff will decide whether or not Nat Wedderburn is fit enough to play on his return from injury, although midfielder Jamie Stevenson is ready for a full 90 minutes.
However, Marc McKenzie is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a knee ligament injury.
