A deserved win means Montrose have gone five games without defeat and hoisted themselves on to the League 2 table’s third rung, as clubs go into the Scottish Cup break.
Montrose had the better of the first half at Clyde but the game was scoreless at the interval.
Come the restart, 19-year-old defender Gareth Rodger had a big hand in the visitors’ four-minute spell which yielded two goals and effectively killed off a robotic Clyde, whose only tactic was to hammer forward the long ball.
First of all his perfectly directed pass put Gerry Wood through on goal and the striker stuck the ball home.
When a corner soon followed, Rodger rose to head the ball into the net.
Practice paid off for the third goal, which came at the end of a lively move shredding the Clyde defence.
Terry Masson in midfield found Bryan Deasley, who in turn fed sub Scott Johnston, who slipped the ball into the net.
Afterwards Rodger, who joined Montrose on loan from St Johnstone on the last day of the transfer window, confirmed this was his first goal for the Gable Endies.
“At the start of the game we were the better team,” Rodger said. “We had loads of chances and we knew that if we kicked on we would get a few more.
“It was brilliant to score my first Montrose goal and I just love to get the boys scoring as well.”
Rodger ,who continues to train daily in Perth plus one evening with Montrose, has settled well at Links Park.
“Everyone is comfortable on the ball,” he added. “We train to keep the ball and create chances by passing.”
Manager Stuart Garden said: “To get three goals at Clyde is never easy. Teams drop points in this league so if we can sustain a run we’ll be right up at the top.”
