Montrose defender Paul Watson netted the winner with a 30-yard free-kick as the Gable Endies saw off managerless Elgin City at Borough Briggs.
Graeme Webster and Scott Johnston gave Montrose the lead at half-time before Jamie Masson and Shane Sutherland netted for Elgin to equalise.
Watson was delighted with his winning goal but most of all the three points.
He said: “It is a massive three points for us. We knew that Elgin would get a lift in the second half as they would have been hurting a bit being two goals down.
“I had a few chances before my goal that I should have scored and I was just happy to see the free-kick go in.
“I was especially happy for the fans because there was a good Montrose support here and they’ve watched some poor stuff recently.”
Montrose opened the scoring after four minutes as Jamie Reid saw his effort saved by Elgin keeper Ray Jellema but the rebound landed at Webster who made no mistake in slotting home.
The lead was doubled on the 28th minute as Johnston got on the end of a cross from Reid to tap in.
Elgin got a goal back on the 48th minute as on-loan Aberdeen youngster Masson netted his first goal for the club.
The home side were reduced to 10 men with 20 minutes to go as skipper Mark Nicolson received his second yellow for a challenge on Alan Campbell. Sutherland netted Elgin’s equaliser just a minute later only for Watson to clinch the points with his superb strike.
