Brechin battled their way to a share of the spoils at home to League One leaders Ayr United.
The Glebe Park men remain bottom of the table, but have closed the gap between themselves and the teams just above them to a single point.
Brechin boss Darren Dods, who led by example as part of a heroic City defence, was delighted at full-time.
Dods said: “I am really pleased with how we played. In the first half we didn’t put them under enough pressure, but we showed great desire in the second half.
“The keeper saved from Paul McLean and there was one off the line. I thought that if any team was going to win it would be Brechin.
“Earlier in the season if we lost the first goal we would not have been able to come back.
“We have now had two great performances back-to-back and we need to keep that going week-in week-out.
“David Bates has been great since he came in and Ross Perry is now showing why he has played at a higher level.
“It was a great finish by Isaac Layne. He is so strong and when he gets one v one he is able to take us up the park. Isaac and Andy Jackson have only played together twice, but they are beginning to link up well.”
In an even first half, ex-Brechin favourite Alan Trouten almost put Ayr ahead on 29 minutes, but his close range header was saved by Graeme Smith.
The Brechin defence was finally breached two minutes from the break. A Ross Caldwell cross was knocked down by Robbie Crawford and James Adams scooped the ball home.
Brechin shocked the leaders with an equaliser two minutes after the restart. A Willie Dyer corner was cleared to the edge of the box and Layne shot home.
On 68 minutes, a long range drive from Ross Docherty clipped the Brechin crossbar.
Having matched the league leaders, Brechin made a late push to try to take all three points. On 84 minutes great work by Layne saw his cross put out for a corner. From Dyer’s delivery, a Paul McLean header was saved by Greg Fleming.
On 86 minutes Fleming saved with his feet from Layne and when play continued, Euan Smith drove over.
A minute from time a free-kick from man-of-the-match Layne dipped just wide.
