Cowdenbeath boss Jimmy Nicholl maintains his side’s beating of Dundee should give them the belief they need to stay in the Championship.
Few gave the Blue Brazil much chance when they travelled to Dens last weekend but they came away with what could prove to be a priceless 2-1 victory in the battle to avoid the drop.
The three points moved them five clear of bottom club Morton but, perhaps more importantly, to within four of Dumbarton as they aim to claw their way out of trouble.
“I don’t think anybody saw it coming,” Nicholl told Courier Sport.
“On the back of what’s been happening with us of late, losing leads and what have you, nobody probably predicted it but it was a great win for us.
“After we missed the penalty after 20 minutes I thought: ‘Here we go again’.
“I thought it was going to be another one of those days, but I thought we did well going 3-5-2 first of all.
“It took the boys a little while to settle into the new system, 20 to 25 minutes or so, and then once we went into the lead I stupidly changed it to 4-4-2, and I hold my hand up for that.
“We gave them too much room in the midfield and they scored, but once we settled we went 2-1 up and I was just wanting the boys to see the game out.
“But they stuck to their task, worked hard, and if you are going to win away from home for the first time in the league it may as well be at the then leaders.
“What it does is give us a wee bit of confidence which will hopefully lead to consistency.”
Nicholl was also delighted to see Jordan Morton grab the all-important clincher 20 minutes from time and hopes that will give the 21-year-old forward renewed impetus.
He concluded: “Jordan came off the bench and popped up with the winner so I’m happy for him.”
Nat Wedderburn and Jon Robertson did not train on Tuesday, but Jamie Stevenson has trained on his return from a calf strain and could be available for the trip to Raith Rovers.
