Montrose are building some momentum as they gear up for a do-or-die play-off against either Brora Rangers or Edinburgh City to preserve their league status.
League Two’s bottom side were worthy winners against promotion-chasing Elgin City.
Manager Paul Hegarty said: “The first 37 minutes were the best we have played since I came to the club.
“We played some lovely football with good passing and created some good chances. From back to middle to front we were excellent.
“They equalised eight minutes from half-time and our keeper Stuart McKenzie has held his hands up and said he should have come for the ball. After that Stuart did what he does best and had a number of courageous takes from cross-balls.
“I have to compliment the team as a whole for their spirit and over the 90 minutes we deserved the victory. I also have to compliment our supporters.
“We are not in a good position, but we appreciate their vocal support.
“My players dug deep and I am pleased to get that out of them. Everyone contributed and we have some momentum going into the play-offs.”
Montrose were in the mood from the start and on six minutes Graham Webster had a 25-yard drive saved.
Two minutes later an acrobatic effort from Jordan Allan went just wide, then a 30-yard free-kick from Allan was held under the crossbar.
Montrose took the lead on 33 minutes. A Scott Johnston corner was knocked down by Garry Wood and Allan shot home.
Elgin levelled four minutes later when Darryl McHardy headed home a corner.
The home side went back in front on 69 minutes. Wood challenged for a Ross McCord cross and the ball broke for Webster to score.
On 75 minutes, a drive from Wood hit the Elgin post and at the death Allan headed against the post from a Wood cross.
