Forfar and Brechin shared the spoils in the final derby between the sides for this season.
With fourth placed Ayr United hammering Stranraer 5-0, a draw didn’t really suit either side with the Honest Men consolidating their hold on the final play-off position, six points ahead of Forfar and seven points ahead of City albeit the Loons have a game in hand.
City were the more dominant team in the opening 45 minutes and should have gone in at the interval 1-0 up if an Allan Walker shot shortly before half-time had gone in rather than come back off the post.
The visitors were made to rue that missed opportunity seven minutes into the second half when a superb Dale Hilson drive from around 20 yards gave the hosts the opener.
City battled back however, and they deservedly drew level in the 73rd minute when Andy Jackson outpaced the home defence to drill a low drive beyond Rab Douglas in the Forfar goal.
Loons boss Dick Campbell said: “We looked a different team today from the side that beat Ayr on Tuesday night. We had a good compact look about us in that game but today I thought that Brechin applied themselves to the conditions a lot better than we did.
“I didn’t think that City had a lot of goalscoring opportunities while I thought that Dale Hilson scored a great goal for us.
“We didn’t pass the ball well and while Brechin had a number of injury problems, they still fielded a very strong side and there was no doubt that they deserved at least a point from the game.
“I’m disappointed because we didn’t really create a lot of chances.”
City counterpart Ray McKinnon said: “We had six players missing today and although the lads who came in did really well, I’m disappointed to take only a point because I thought that it was a game we dominated from start to finish.
“Forfar had one chance in the first half and one shot on goal in the second half which they scored from while we created numerous chances, particularly in the first half.
“While I’m disappointed with the final outcome, the positives for us are that we didn’t give away any bad goals as we did in our previous couple of games.”
