Robert Thomson believes Brechin are not far away from the wins they need to rescue their season.
City remain bottom of League One after a frustrating loss in terrible weather conditions at Stair Park on Saturday.
Striker Thomson said: “It’s a sore defeat to take as a win would have moved us off the bottom.
“Playing against a strong wind in the first half we defended well but we lost the opening goal on the stroke of half-time.”
Thomson beat the keeper to a cross and in normal conditions would have made it 1-1 only for an outrageous gust of wind to blow the ball away from him.
The big attacker added: “That was frustrating but it was the same conditions for both teams.
“We showed enough to suggest we can get a couple of wins and the lads feel we can get them. There are still a lot of games left but we know we want to get a couple of wins soon.
“It’s all about Tuesday night’s game (at Stenhousemuir) now and working for a result.”
Brechin might have been ahead on 16 minutes but David Weatherston had strayed offside before latching onto Andy Jackson’s pass.
Instead the home side made the breakthrough on the stroke of half-time when Andy Stirling netted on the rebound after Graeme Smith saved the initial effort from Paul Cairney.
Brechin should have levelled on 76 minutes when Thomson outjumped Blues keeper Cameron Belford.
However, despite getting beyond the keeper after Jackson’s cross, the ball swirled away on the wind for a goal kick.
It summed-up the visitors’ misfortune and their fate was sealed when Willie Gibson sent a superb 20-yard free kick soaring into the net with 11 minutes left.
Brechin continued to attack, with Thomson and Lewis Spence having efforts saved in the dying minutes.
Despite the loss, Brechin player-boss Darren Dods was also optimistic, saying: “Losing the goal just before half-time was disappointing as we had down well against the wind.
“The most annoying thing is that we did not create enough chances despite having a hurricane behind us in the second half.
“We need to be looking for back-to-back wins at some point and we know a couple of wins could drag eighth placed Cowdenbeath into the bottom two.
“Stranraer are an example of what can happen in League One. They were struggling when we beat them a few weeks ago but they have gone on a run and that can happen if you get a win under your belt.”
Delighted Stranraer boss Brian Reid said: “Willie Gibson’s free-kick was of the highest quality and got us over the line in a very competitive contest.
“It was a battle in atrocious conditions and credit to both teams for trying to play in that weather.
“I do not think even Barcelona and Real Madrid could play well in these conditions.”
Cowdenbeath’s game with Forfar at Central Park was postponed on Saturday morning.
