Rangers boss Ally McCoist hopes to focus on the football now

Rangers manager Ally McCoist is relishing the opportunity to focus on football again following a period of off-field uncertainty.

Last week’s annual meeting saw all five directors win re-election to the board, while challengers Paul Murray, Malcolm Murray, Alex Wilson and Scott Murdoch failed in their attempts to join the Ibrox boardroom.

The stormy summit brought to an end a power struggle between the board and requisitioners stretching back several months.

McCoist said: “I am actually pleased that the AGM is out of the way and that we can now totally focus on the football side of things.

“It was the first AGM in about 2 years and my first one as manager.

“It was very interesting but I think the most important thing, from my point of view, is that we can now focus on the football.”

The last home game against Ayr United on December 7 saw the majority of supporters in the crowd participate in a red card display in protest against the current board.

Having retained their positions following last week’s vote, McCoist is unsure what kind of atmosphere to expect when Stranraer come calling in the Scottish League One clash on Thursday.

He said: “I’m just looking forward to the continued support that we have received from the fans.

“Home and away they have turned up in massive numbers. They obviously had the protest at the last home game.

“I’m really unsure of what the fans will do but I’m very hopeful they will just continue to give us their fantastic support.”

The meeting itself saw angry fans vent their frustration at the Ibrox hierarchy and their running of the club.

McCoist added: “I always knew it was going to be a very emotional meeting.

“Let’s be honest about it, I would imagine the majority of shareholders at the AGM that day were 100% Rangers supporters.

“There wouldn’t be too many from the institutional investors for example.

“It was their first opportunity to get some questions to the board and hopefully get some answers to their questions.

“I knew it was going to be heated at times but I can understand the emotion of the day, that’s for sure.”

As Rangers prepare to put another challenging year behind them and look ahead to 2014, McCoist is hoping for further success on the pitch.

He said: “From the football side of things, there has been improvement. I’m hopeful all the fans would agree but there has to be continued improvement.”
