Montrose 1 Lothian Thistle 2 (AET): Non-leaguers knock Gable Endies out of Scottish Cup
ByThe Courier Reporter
Montrose exited the Scottish Cup, beaten at home by East of Scotland League outfit Lothian Thistle after extra-time.
The Lothian players celebrated on the pitch at the end and no one can say they did not deserve their historic triumph.
In an even opening period, Terry Masson had a shot saved for Montrose and John Kerr shot wide from good position for the visitors.
Lothian took the lead on 16 minutes when a cross broke for Scott Gormley to supply a fine finish.
Montrose drew level on 31 minutes. Scott Johnston found Masson 25 yards out and he drilled home a low shot.
Three minutes later, Graham Webster headed wide as Montrose tried to assert some control.
Both sides could have won the tie in the closing seconds of normal time. With 90 minutes on the watch a Gary Fraser shot was blocked by the feet of the keeper after great work by Webster.
In added time, Thistle’s Dean Cummings was denied by Ross Salmon.
Lothian regained the lead seven minutes into extra-time. Substitute Willis Hare ran at the home defence and scored with the aid of a deflection.
In the dying seconds Adrian Mallagaray of Montrose lifted the ball over the bar with only the keeper to beat.
