Montrose boss Paul Hegarty still taking nothing for granted

Montrose may be 10 points clear of the bottom of the table and the dreaded pyramid play-off spot but Gable Endies boss Paul Hegarty is taking absolutely nothing for granted until their League Two survival is mathematically assured.

The Angus side picked up another precious point in Elgin last week with the manager admitting that was a result he would have accepted against Jim Weir’s title-chasing side prior to kick-off.

Now though, he is looking for his team to go one better and secure a win at home this weekend against Annan and hopefully further distance themselves from rock bottom East Stirling.

Hegarty said: “It was a great point for us last week and if someone had said beforehand that we would get a draw at a fortress like Borough Briggs, we would have been delighted.

“We will try to put on another good performance against Annan this week and hopefully get three points this time.

“We have done really well recently but we still have work to do to ensure we remain in this division.

“We are determined to cement our place and then if we can get a few more points on board, we can start to look up to sixth or fifth.

“That would be a fitting reward for the Montrose fans who have been great with us all season.

“So we will look to pick up all three points when we play Annan at Links Park.”

Hegarty has already been busy making plans for next season and Terry Masson has now extended his contract at Links Park for a seventh season.

He became the eighth player to sign up for the next campaign and Hegarty revealed that he is also waiting to hear back from some of the younger players as well as top scorer Gary Fraser.

The manager added: “I am delighted that Terry has agreed to stay with the club and we are also trying to get Gary Fraser to sign a new deal. He has scored 19 goals for us this season and the player is currently keeping his options open as he is entitled to do until the end of the campaign.”

Hegarty has a full squad to choose from apart from long-term injury victims Paul Watson and Ross McCord.
