Montrose took the scalp of league leaders Elgin City as they chalked up a third successive home victory to move just a point off the pace at the top of League Two.
Assistant manager John Holt said: “That was a great win and it was achieved by hard work. Our players put in a shift and showed great character and great determination. That is why they won the game.
“It was a team effort but we scored two great goals. It was a well-worked corner and Graham Webster scored with a header, then Gary Fraser scored a typical striker’s goal and placed the ball into the corner of the net.
“It was another home clean sheet, but we now need to start picking up points away from home.
“We have three wins from five games and we played some decent stuff in the two we lost at Berwick and Annan so we might well have been a couple of points better off.”
Both sides had chances in an even opening period. Kyle McLeod should have done better with two headers for Elgin then Ross Campbell sent a header looping onto the roof of the Elgin net.
On 31 minutes, Ross McCord sent a dipping volley just over the Elgin bar.
The deadlock was broken on 37 minutes when a McCord corner was headed home by Webster.
Campbell headed over on 39 minutes, then in stoppage-time at the break, new loan signing Gavin Malin had two shots saved by Mark Hurst. McLeod missed a gilt-edged chance on 53 minutes when he screwed a shot wide and Montrose made Elgin pay with a second goal six minutes later.
McCord released Fraser on the left and he supplied an accomplished finish.
Montrose have still to concede a goal at home this season and they kept that proud record intact four minutes from time. Brian Cameron got the break of the ball six yards out and Ross Salmon plunged to his left to pull off a miraculous stop.
