Montrose made sure that the club’s annual sportsman’s dinner on Saturday would have an extra buzz when two goals from Bryan Deasley gave them victory over Albion Rovers.
Deasley opened the scoring on nine minutes when he sent a scorcher into the top corner from 25 yards.
Albion equalised on 25 minutes. Montrose claimed the ball was out of play before Mark McGuigan scored with a header at the back post.
The goal enlivened Albion and they should have been ahead on 50 minutes when Mark Shankland headed wide from close range.
Montrose settled and Paul Watson sent a free-kick curling just wide then, in 72 minutes, a Gareth Rodger piledriver was tipped over by Neil Parry.
The keeper was denied credit for his save when the officials gave a goal-kick.
Deasley grabbed the winner a minute later when he sent a glorious lob over Parry from 30 yards.
Montrose boss Stuart Garden said: “I am delighted to get the three points. It was a tough game and it needed two magnificent strikes from Deasley to win it.
“Bryan has done brilliantly since coming here and has given us a new dimension. His work rate off the ball is different class and he puts defenders under pressure.
“The win will give an extra buzz to our sportsman’s dinner and we must now go down to Berwick on Wednesday and try to win the game.”
