Brechin kept alive their dream of avoiding the drop into League Two with a victory over promotion-chasing Ayr United.
Brechin’s win, coming swiftly after their midweek triumph over Forfar, turns up the heat on the Loons and Cowdenbeath in the League One basement area.
Brechin player-boss Darren Dods was delighted that his men have at least given themselves a chance of beating relegation.
Dods said: “At the goal, Robert Thomson got across his man and scored with a great header.
“Ayr threw on their subs and went for it and we sat a bit deep. We kept plugging away and it was a great shift from our midfield. That is only the second time this season that we have had back-to-back wins and it is two clean sheets in a row as well,” he said.
“There are eight games to go and we must keep it going. We are fighting for our lives and the aim is to take it to the last game.
“The momentum is with us and we will take confidence from this result.”
The teams cancelled each other out in the first half.
Ayr upped their game at the start of the second half and Alan Forrest shot just wide.
Graeme Smith made an outstanding triple save to keep out shots from Jamie Adams, Ryan Stevenson and Forrest.
Brechin rocked their high-flying opponents when they took the lead on 75 minutes. Liam Watt sent in a corner and Robert Thomson rose high on the near post to score with a glancing header.
Brechin held on courageously for the points and might have scored again two minutes from time when Thomson shot into the sidenet after a great move.
