East Fife’s Nathan Austin has rightly taken the plaudits at Bayview this season but at the weekend the Fifers reminded everyone they’re far from a one-man team.
Top scorer Austin missed out on Saturday’s game through injury.
However, the Fifers saw off Annan 4-2.
On-loan Hibs man Jamie Insall was handed a starting jersey and found the net twice.
Strike partner Kevin Smith, who didn’t get his name on the scoresheet, pulled the Annan defence ragged.
Bayview boss Gary Naysmith said: “I thought the front two were electric and were the best players on the pitch.
“They complemented each other well and caused Annan all sorts of trouble.
“We had a bit of a worry because they hadn’t played with each other all season so most of the team talk was based on Jamie and Kevin, making sure they were only a certain distance from each other and helped each other out.
“They took me to my word,” he added.
East Fife had a two-goal cushion within six minutes.
Scott Mercer’s cross was met by Kyle Wilkie, whose effort was heading wide until it was turned home by the head of Insall.
Jonathan Page added another just a few minutes later when he was the first to react to a loose ball in the box and beat Blair Currie from eight yards.
The visitors started the second 45 in the same manner as the hosts had in the first.
When a free-kick was given away on the edge of the box, Peter Weatherston punished the home side by firing past Liam Kelly.
It would have been easy for East Fife to panic, but they refused to, and Page headed home his second of the game.
Insall netted number four to seal the win, despite Smart Osadolor hauling another back for Jim Chapman’s men.
