Raith Rovers’ Grant Anderson stunned by memory man Sir Alex

Grant Anderson.
Grant Anderson.

Raith’s Grant Anderson has revealed that he was taken aback when Sir Alex Ferguson remembered him again after one brief meeting all of eight years ago.

Anderson came up through the ranks of Glasgow boys’ club Harmony Row, a side the legendary former Manchester United manager also played for.

Sir Alex is still involved with the club and was at the recent centenary civic reception, with Anderson astonished that he recognised him after so long.

However, the knight of the realm was suffering from photo fatigue by the time the Rovers player got round to sneaking a “selfie” with him.

Anderson said: “I managed to take a selfie with Sir Alex.

“I think he was a bit scunnered by then as it was at the end. To be fair, there were about 300 people at the event and he had got round just about all of them so I didn’t want to be chasing him around the room.

“He went round all the kids and then he came to me and I had to steal a selfie with him!

“There had been a group photo before that and he remembered me from the last time I met him which was about eight years ago.

“He didn’t know I played for Raith as the first time I met him I had just finished playing for my boys’ club and I had signed for the Juniors.

“I snuck in at the back of the photo and he ended up coming in the back as well. He was standing beside me and said, ‘All right, big man, how are you doing? How’s the football going?.

“When I told him I played full-time for Raith he said, ‘brilliant’. It was really nice that he recognised me but I didn’t expect it at all.

“A lot of people say Sir Alex is very good at remembering faces but it was great that he recognised me from the last time.

“Sir Alex played for the club and he has backed them for a lot of years.

“I was just delighted to get my photo taken with him.”

While delighted to meet Sir Alex again, Anderson was obviously less pleased with last weekend’s defeat at Livingston and he is hoping there will be a big response when Falkirk visit Stark’s Park this afternoon.

The Bairns are now three points ahead of Rovers who are sitting in fourth spot and Anderson is determined to close that gap.

He added: “We are looking to bounce back on Saturday.

“We put in a good performance against Hibs but Livingston wasn’t good enough.

“So we want to rectify that this weekend.

“It should be a good occasion and we want to turn them over on our home patch.

“There is a three-point gap but we are within touching distance.”

Raith captain Jason Thomson is a major doubt for the game with a back injury while Craig Barr will definitely miss out as he has a grade one strain in his abductor.

However, Ross Callachan played the full 90 minutes for the Under-20s on Tuesday night and should be in the squad.
