East Stirlingshire 1 East Fife 3: Wilkie the tormentor as Fife run poor Shire ragged

East Fife midfielder Kyle Wilkie destroyed East Stirlingshire and gaffer Gary Naysmith was the first to praise his efforts.

Wilkie put in arguably his best 90 minutes in a Fife shirt at Ochilview by tormenting the home defenders from first whistle until last.

He got his own name on the scoresheet and was also involved in the penalty incident which helped the Fifers net their second of the day.

Naysmith admitted Wilkie’s close control, movement, passing and link-up play was exceptional.

He said: “He’s been different class for us. He has the top assists and is up to seven or eight goals as well.

“In recent weeks we’ve moved him out to the left and it hasn’t affected him.”

The hosts took the lead against the run of play, with their opener having more than a hint of luck about it.

Kris Faulds’ free-kick was on target but wouldn’t have troubled Liam Kelly until it was deflected past the Fife keeper by Naysmith.

Shire’s lead didn’t last long, with the Fifers replying in style. Wilkie skinned his marker on the line before advancing into the box and curling a fine effort past Richie Barnard.

Wilkie continued to cause problems in the Shire box and was up-ended by Aron Lynas.

Nathan Austin took the penalty but his strike was well saved by Barnard. Austin was first to react, though, and netted at the second attempt.

The hosts tried to get their way back into the game in the second half but were unable to breakdown the Methil men.

On-loan Dundee United winger Ali Coote’s composed finish saw him net a goal on his debut and seal the win.
