This game brought a first home goal in 2015 and the first three-point haul in eight outings, so it was a big day for Cowdenbeath.
But the Cowden players know that this week they need more performances like Saturday’s to give them a chance of staying in the Championship.
The result moved Cowden two points clear of Alloa in the race to avoid the relegation play-offs, and they see this week as crucial as they play Raith Rovers, at Kirkcaldy, on Wednesday, and bottom side Livingston at home on Saturday.
On-loan Dundee United striker Kudus Oyenuga laid on two goals.
The first came two minutes from half-time, when his fierce shot was parried by Sons keeper Danny Rogers, and Lewis Toshney followed up to open the scoring.
Then two minutes after half-time Oyenuga repeated the dose, with his low drive blocked by Rogers and Sean Higgins prodding home from close in.
Cowden’s great day was complete eight minutes from time when striker Colin Nish headed home Colin Marshall’s cross.
Oyenuga said: “Yes I like scoring goals but the important thing today was winning, and it was nice to be able to play a part in two of the goals.
“It is indeed a big week for the club and it was a good performance against Dumbarton with us creating a lot of chances and tucking three away.
“Maybe we should have had more, and I know myself that I missed at least two good chances, but the win was the main thing.
“Now we have to look to go to Kirkcaldy on Wednesday and add more points to our total and then concentrate on Livi after that”.
The 22 year-old added: “I have really enjoyed my time here and the chairman Donald Findlay and manager Jimmy Nicholl have helped me develop my game by giving me the chance to play 20-odd matches at a very good level, and I want to repay them by helping the club to stay in this division.”
Nicholl wants more of the same on Wednesday and against Livi next weekend.
“It has been a long time in coming, but we played some good stuff and at last scored goals in front of our own fans.
“It is a huge week for us and we need to repeat that sort of form against Raith Rovers and Livingston.
“Our target is nine points from the three games, and if we achieve that it will give us a big chance of avoiding the play-offs.”
Sons boss Ian Murray was unhappy with his team.
“We did well enough until we lost the first goal, but after that it was a case of how many.
“It was simply not good enough.
“The players seem to think all the hard work has been done, but we want to finish the season with a run of good results.
“I will be looking for a lot more from them in the last four games”.
