Montrose celebrated a major milestone this week and boss George Shields is keen to mark it with victory over Berwick.
The Gable Endies are back to the bread and butter of the league this evening after two tough Scottish Cup encounters with Arbroath and, although his side’s cup run was finally ended after extra time in Saturday’s replay, Shields hopes his men can return to winning ways at Shielfield.
The Links Park club reached the ripe old age of 135 on Monday, as it was October 13 in 1879 when the motion was passed in the old Montrose Town Hall for Montrose to join the ever increasing number of football clubs in Scotland.
So Shields is understandably keen to make it an enjoyable, as well as a memorable, week for all concerned.
“It would be great to celebrate that with three points down at Berwick that’s the objective,” Shields told Courier Sport.
“It was obviously disappointing against Arbroath because we put a lot into both games and we probably could have won both games in 90 minutes, but it wasn’t to be.
“We’ve now just got to concentrate on the league and try to continue putting pressure on the other teams in the top four.”
Shields is expected to reshuffle his pack after the 210 minute tussle with Arbroath, although Steven Robb is set to miss out with a hamstring injury.
He could return for Saturday’s fixture at Queen’s Park, however.
Leighton McIntosh should be back after his absence, while striker Stephen Day, who missed the cup replay against Arbroath due to work commitments, will be available tonight by a lucky quirk of fate.
Unlike most of the Montrose squad, he will only have a short trip to Shielfield today as he has been on a work’s course in Newcastle.
