Dundee have been drawn against the current Premiership table-toppers Inverness in the third round of the League Cup.
The Dark Blues edged through against Forfar on Tuesday night, winning the tie in extra-time, and Dens assistant boss Ray Farningham admits their next assignment in the competition is an incredibly difficult one.
He said: “Inverness are up there at the top of the SPFL just now and are doing brilliantly. I think it is the toughest draw we could have got apart from Celtic.
“However, all the pressure will be on them and we are looking to do well in the cup.”
Inverness boss Terry Butcher said: “It’s a great place to go, we have got good memories of going down there.
“John Brown, my old sparring partner, I’m sure will talk the game up well. Dundee gave a good account of themselves in the Premier League and were perhaps unfortunate to go down. They have got some good players and I’m sure John will have them whipped up well.”
The draw at Hampden presented Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara with a home tie against the club he left to join the Tangerines, Partick Thistle.
Thistle boss Alan Archibald said: “It is a cup we have struggled in, in our recent history, so we want a run.
“They are a very good team, we know their strengths, we saw that on Saturday when they beat a very good St Johnstone team 4-0. They have great attacking options but we kept them at bay in the league and hopefully we can do it again in the cup.”
United’s top-tier Tayside rivals St Johnstone face a tricky journey to Championship pace-setters Hamilton, who now play on an artificial surface.
The rest of the third round ties are: Hibs v Stranraer, Celtic v Morton, Livingston v Motherwell, Hearts v Queen of the South and Falkirk v Aberdeen. Ties to be played on September 24 and 25.
