Arbroath’s championship-winning side are in the running for a hat-full of prizes at the Irn-Bru End of Season Awards on Thursday.

Boss Paul Sheerin has been shortlisted for third division manager of the year, after guiding the Lichties to their first-ever title in his debut season in management.

The side’s star, striker Gavin Swankie, is also among the nominations in the player of the year category, and is to be awarded the “Ginger Boot” as top scorer in the Scottish Football League.

Young midfielder Josh Falkingham has been put forward in the young player of the year category.

Arbroath chairman John Christison said the ceremony in Glasgow’s Fruit Market would be a just reward for the hard work put in by all associated with the club over the season.

“It will be good to get down there and it would be nice to see some of the boys pick up an award because they have done a fantastic job,” he said.

The ceremony will also be used to announce the league table for Irn-Bru’s Tops for Youth Teams initiative that has been running all season. Supporters have been urged to collect bottle tops throughout the campaign, and the club that bags the most will win £10,000 to put towards youth development.

Every club will receive a share regardless of how many tops they have collected, with the soft drinks manufacturer donating £70,000 to the project.

Irn-Bru senior brand manager Martin Steele said, “We are thrilled to be able to pledge an additional £70,000 to youth football in the SFL.

“The top prize of £10,000 can make a significant contribution to a team in any of the three leagues and we are pleased to let supporters and local communities help to decide where this money should go.

“We hope that clubs and supporters will see a real impact from this investment in the coming seasons.”
