Brechin boss Ray McKinnon will hold talks this weekend with former Scotland striker Derek Riordan to discuss the player’s future.
The striker, who made his name playing for Hibs before moving to Celtic, has been without a club since being released by Alloa at the end of last season.
However, he has been training with City recently and was in the squad as a trialist for the league games against Stranraer and Ayr, coming on as a sub in the match with the Blues.
McKinnon though was keen to give the 31-year-old the chance to show what he could do over the course of a full 90 minutes and he did so in a friendly against Angus rivals Montrose on Tuesday night.
Brechin ran out 4-0 winners, with Riordan netting one of the goals.
McKinnon will assess things further following a training session on Saturday, with City’s league game against Stirling Albion being postponed due to the Binos having to play Hurlford in a Scottish Cup third round replay.
The manager said: “Derek played the full 90 minutes against Montrose. It was his first game for a while and he needs to work on his match fitness but he scored a goal and you can see he has a lot of quality.
“I had a chat with him after the game. He will train with us again on Saturday and I will have further discussions to see where we go from there.”
Three players who will definitely miss the training session are City’s three long-term injury victims, Callum Tapping (knee), Craig Molloy (knee) and Alan Trouten (groin) with McKinnon revealing there is mixed news on when they will return to action.
He said: “Tappy will see a specialist next week and fingers crossed he receives some good news. He has been out for six weeks which is obviously a long time.
“We are also hoping that Craig Molloy and Alan Trouten will be back training in the next two weeks.”
