Dunfermline boss Jim Jefferies says his young players gave a hint of their potential in their five-star performance over Ayr at the weekend.
The Pars manager had suggested in the build-up to Saturday’s game that he felt someone was going to be given a hiding and, unfortunately for the Honest Men, it was to be them on the receiving end.
A brace from Ryan Wallace and goals from Alex Whittle, Andy Geggan and Josh Falkingham saw the hosts run out convincing 5-1 winners to take them into this weekend’s game at Forfar, and Jefferies wants his players to push on from that showing.
“It was the best performance of the season for me, even though I think we have been playing well in games,” he said.
“The difference was that the end product was there for everybody to see there was great quality of passing, movement, support and then when you come to the final bit, the finish was just tremendous. I do not think that you will see three better goals in one game than the second, third and fourth.
“They were all tremendous goals and stuff that makes you happy because boys put a lot of work in on the training ground with us.
“It shows you what level they can get to because you could not say Ayr United were bad. But I do not think that 5-1 flattered us Ayr were just outplayed. We had just too much pace and tempo for them and they could not cope with it as long as we kept it up.
“It was a great performance and one that has been coming.”
The Pars’ win saw them stay five points behind league leaders Rangers and a win at Station Park on Saturday will set them up nicely for their trip to face the Ibrox giants on October 12.
“We need to give this young side time to mature,” said Jefferies. “They will only get better and there are players there who could possibly go on and play at a higher level.”
