Scotland midfielder James McArthur can expect a few calls and texts asking the age-old question how do you win at Wembley?
National coach Gordon Strachan will lead out his team at the home of English football to take on the Auld Enemy in the friendly international on August 14 to mark the 125th anniversary of the formation of the FA.
It will be a strange place for many of the Scots side but not so for Wigan midfielder McArthur, who is right at home at the London venue.
“I’ve had great experiences at Wembley, beating Millwall and Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final and final,” he said.
“So I’m going back there again with Wigan for the Community Shield match against Manchester United (on the 11th) before going there again with Scotland a few days later.
“Hopefully, I can keep my good winning record up at Wembley. Lifting the FA Cup was just an unbelievable day but to go there and beat England would be right up there beside it.
“We know it’s going to be really tough but I like being the underdog. What we achieved with Wigan last season in winning the FA Cup shows you anything is possible and it gives you confidence.
“But I don’t think anyone needs geeing up for a Scotland versus England match. One of my biggest memories as a kid was of watching Paul Gascoigne score his goal for England against Scotland at Euro 96.
“You grow up dreaming of being a part of it and hopefully that’s going to happen for me in a couple of weeks’ time. I also remember listening to the second leg of the Euro qualifier in 1999 and thinking we had a right chance before Don Hutchison scored the winner.
“I’m sure that game will be getting brought up again in the run-up to this one!
“England are a top side, though, and it’s going to be a tough match because they are full of quality players.
“But we have a good squad too and there’s competition for places now. And it won’t faze me because I’ve become used to playing against the England players in my time down here.
“I’m just really looking forward to it. Scotland v England is such a big match and everyone will be ready to go.
McArthur spent five years with Hamilton before moving to the Latics in a £500,000 deal in 2010.
