Raith Rovers chairman David Somerville has moved to dispel rumours that he has decided to step down from his post on a permanent basis.
Somerville announced in May that he had decided to take an extended sabbatical from the club over the summer, citing the “all-consuming” nature of the post as one reason for the break.
His decision was a further blow to a support who had missed out on promotion to the SPL and were still reeling after the club had made big financial cuts, with 15 players heading for the exit.
With Raith playing their first competitive fixture of the season last weekend against Cowdenbeath, and Somerville still on his sabbatical, fans have begun speculating that he had severed his ties with the club.
The chairman says that is far from the case and instead he aims to sit down soon with the directors who have been looking after his duties in his absence.
He told Courier Sport, “I am up north just now having a wee break but I intend to have a meeting with the rest of the board of directors either later this week or next. I have had a few months off during the summer to recharge the batteries.
“However, I am well aware that things do not stand still at a football club. While I have been away, other people have been doing a good job. How would you feel if your boss had taken a lot of time off and then turned up saying, ‘By the way, that’s me coming straight back in’?
“So I will have a sit down with the board and take things from there. However, I would like to stress that my interest in Raith Rovers Football Club has in no way diminished.”
