Queen of the South 3 Forfar 0: Loons boss sees encouraging signs amid defeat

Forfar emerged with credit from their Scottish Communities League Cup clash with first division Queens.

A first-half goal from Tom Brighton flattered the Doonhamers before two more goals in as many second-half minutes took the wind out of the Loons’ sails.

Assistant manager Ian Campbell said, “Overall, we are not too disappointed. The first goal was a turning point because we had been in contention up to that point.

“I think the final scoreline flattered Queens a bit but we defended better than we have been doing and hopefully we can take this improvement into the league.”

Queens exerted early pressure with Craig Reid and Stephen McKenna linking well on the right before Allan Johnston won a corner.

Mark Campbell rose above the visiting defence for a header which drifted wide.

Michael Bolocheweckyj then managed to get his body in the way of a fierce Stephen Simmons shot which looked goal-bound.

While forced to defend for large portions of the opening period, the Loons were bright on the break and it took the attentions of both Craig Reid and Lee Robinson to snuff out the danger posed by Iain Campbell.

Play was quickly back at the other end where a series of corners kept the Forfar defenders on their toes.

The home side went ahead on the half-hour, Brighton finding space in the box to convert Carmichael’s cross.

Forfar almost hit back when Chris Templeman’s firm header drew a diving save from Robinson.

The visitors had an even better chance when Kevin Motion found himself in the clear, only to slice wide.

Queens might have doubled their lead on the restart when Carmichael crossed for Scott McLaughlin. However, the midfielder could only divert his effort wide.

Forfar should have been level when Templeman seized on a slip by Mark Campbell and crossed for Iain Campbell. However, the striker dithered on the ball.

The Loons’ hopes of a comeback nose-dived when the Doonhamers doubled their lead.

Carmichael was again the architect with a fine pass to Johnston who produced a composed finish.

Forfar were out of it when substitute Nicky Clark added a third from another Carmichael assist.
