Raith Rovers 0 Livingston 1: Barr to progress for Raith

Raith Rovers missed a chance to lift themselves off the bottom of the First Division table with a home defeat to Livingston.

A 56th minute header from Lions defender Craig Barr settled the match, leaving the Kirkcaldy side with plenty to ponder.

Rovers went close on 13 minutes as Jamie Walker’s long-range strike dipped just over the bar, but Denis Prynchynenko went even closer 10 minutes later when his 30-yard free-kick thunderbolt was deflected onto the crossbar.

Livingston defender Barr gave Rovers a warning of his threat from set pieces, flashing a header just wide from a Mark Fotheringham corner on 34 minutes.

The first half had been a tight affair, but Raith struggled to live with Livingston’s sharper passing game after the break.

The home side had a huge let off on 51 minutes when Liam Fox raced onto Bobby Barr’s low cross, but somehow scooped the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Rovers were punished for more slack marking five minutes later.

Fotheringham’s corner was flicked on at the near post and Craig Barr arrived unmarked to head past David McGurn from the centre of the penalty box.

Rovers’ response to falling behind was unconvincing, with goalkeeper McGurn earning the sponsors’ man of the match award as he prevented the Lions from extending their lead, making several saves mostly from long range as the visitors threatened on the break.

With most attacks breaking down outside the box, it took Rovers until the 89th minute to have their first serious effort of the second half, substitute Dougie Hill heading Allan Walker’s deep cross into the side net.

Afterwards Raith boss John McGlynn said: ”I thought we might have sneaked a point. There wasn’t an awful lot in it, but there’s a very thin line between winning and losing.

”It’s not nice to be bottom of the table, but we have to stick together and stay positive. There’s a long way to go yet.”
