Gavin Rae has promised Dundee he will decide in the next few days whether to stay at the club or leave in January.
The former Scotland international joined the Dark Blues for the second time in his career when he signed a short-term deal in October.
His arrival has coincided with a reversal of fortunes for the Dens Park side which has seen them leap up the First Division table to put pressure on runaway pace-setters Ross County.
Dundee boss Barry Smith has already spoken to Rae, asking him to extend his stay, and the 33-year-old, who left Championship side Cardiff during the summer, is set to give him an answer sooner rather than later.
He said: ”I’ve no idea really what the future holds. I spoke to the manager last week and he said he is wanting me to stay but I don’t know what’s going to happen. My contract is up on January 17 so I will make a decision between now and then.
”There is nothing definite from other clubs, so I will try to let Dundee know as soon as possible. I need to get myself sorted out but I would be happy to stay as I am really enjoying it.”
Rae admitted he has been impressed by the Dundee squad and manager. However, having played alongside Smith during his first spell at the club, Rae revealed that being on first-name terms with the boss looked likely to hit him in the pocket.
He continued: ”This club has been amazing for me over the years and I have loved it here. It’s been a big part of my career and coming back has been great.
”There are still a lot of familiar faces behind the scenes which helped me settle right back in again. There is also a good, strong squad here and I have been really impressed by the lads.
”There is a fine team spirit and a lot of camaraderie between the boys and the manager as well. You can have a laugh and joke with him but everybody knows there’s a line you don’t step over.
”It was strange at first with Barry as manager as I have played with him and known him for a long time.
”You get fined a fiver if you call him by his name and it looked like it was going to cost me a few quid to start with. But I ended up just losing a tenner you’ve got to remember, I’m from Aberdeen.
”Seriously though, he was someone I always thought could go into management. I think he has made the transition really well and he is doing a great job.
”You know what you get from him as he works himself into the ground and it seems to be paying off.”
Rae was in the Dundee side that drew with league leaders Ross County in Dingwall last Saturday. The game was marred for the Dark Blues after Stephen O’Donnell was red carded, a decision which Dundee are appealing.
However, Rae insists the squad have taken a lot of positives from the performance as they prepare to face Morton on Boxing Day.
He said: ”Considering the way the game went, it was quite a good result on Saturday. We started brightly and seemed to be doing well until Stephen got sent off.
”They had most of the possession after that but we can take a lot of positives from the way we played. Obviously, we would have preferred for it to have stayed with us winning 1-0 for the full 90 but it wasn’t to be. But we shouldn’t be too disheartened.”
Meanwhile Dundee have received permission from the SFL to wear a specially-designed kit in their away match to Ayr United on Saturday April 28 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Dens Park club being crowned Scottish champions.
Barry Smith’s side will don dark blue jerseys similar to the ones worn by Bob Shankly’s side when they clinched the title 50 years to the day by defeating St Johnstone 3-0 at Muirton Park.
