Matt Lockwood still willing to put himself on the spot despite recent penalty woe

Kris Miller, Courier, 26/12/11. Dundee V Greenock Morton, 2nd half. Morton keeper saves Matt Lockwoods penalty.

Dundee defender Matt Lockwood has vowed to keep calm and carry on taking penalties despite failing to find the net against Morton.

The Englishman watched in anguish as Greenock goalie Dominic Cervi who was on loan at Dens Park last season saved his spotkick on Monday, with the Dens men eventually falling to a 1-0 defeat.

It was deja vu for Lockwood, who also missed one against Ayr United, but he insists he has lost none of his confidence.

”It was a terrible penalty,” he admitted. ”There is no point trying to pretend otherwise because it was the right height for their keeper.

”But you don’t suddenly become a bad penalty-taker overnight. That is not the case here.

”If the gaffer is happy enough to let me carry on taking them then I won’t have a problem either.”

He added: ”I was actually tallying up my record recently and have taken over 50 penalties throughout my career, starting way back at Leyton Orient, and have missed just about six.

”So if anyone out there has a better record then they can put their CV on the table and we can discuss.”

Lockwood said: ”I started taking them when I was in my early 20s for Orient and have always been associated with penalties.

”It just so happens that I have missed the last two against Ayr and Morton but these things happen in football.

”If I had scored that one against Morton early in the second half we would probably have gone on to win the game because it could well have been the turning point.

”It wasn’t to be, though. I was as frustrated as anyone but my belief hasn’t changed when it comes to taking them.”

Lockwood admitted that the players felt that, by losing to Morton, they let down the fans, almost 6,000 of whom turned out on a chilly Boxing Day.

He said: ”One of the most disappointing things was not sending the big crowd away home happy. It would have been great to give them something to shout about going into the new year because they deserve it for their support.

”The lads appreciate it so much and they urged us on to the very last kick of the ball against Morton.”

He added: ”We can understand their frustration particularly the ones who don’t come all the time as we really wanted to make it an enjoyable afternoon to entice them back again in the future. We hope it is a one-off result.”

Meanwhile, Rhys Weston is a doubt for Monday’s trip to face Raith Rovers after being taken off towards the end of the Morton match. Steven Milne, Nicky Riley and Jake Hyde are carrying knocks and are being monitored.
