Arbroath midfielder Brian Kerr insists he won’t be trying to use this weekend’s high-profile Scottish Cup tie against as a stepping stone back to a higher level.
Kerr (30), who has played for Scotland, Newcastle, Coventry, Motherwell, Hibs, Livingston and Dundee in his time, insists he is happy to be at Arbroath and not desperate to go anywhere.
Earlier this week Arbroath team-mate Josh Falkingham admitted he hopes to use the exposure of the match being televised live by Sky to help him move back to a higher level in the game (link).
But Kerr said: “I am looking forward to the Rangers game to test myself and to see whether or not I am still up to that standard. However, I’m not looking on this game as a chance to get myself a move.
“If the opportunity came along to move to a bigger club I would look at it but I wouldn’t jump at it because there are issues to consider.
“There won’t be any ‘come and get me’ chat from me. Just enjoying playing again is good enough for me at the moment.
“After being forced out of the game and not receiving any offers I became quite disillusioned with football. I am still considering other options, including possibly setting up a property business, because I have a family to look after.
“But when my mate Stuart Malcolm suggested to the gaffer that he come in for me I decided that I was too young to leave the sport and now I find I’m enjoying it more than ever.
“There is no real pressure at this level it’s like having a kick-about with your mates and playing for Arbroath has given me a new lease of life. I have my enthusiasm back.”
Kerr is not ruling out a cup shock on Sunday.
“There is always hope and anything can happen in 90 minutes,” he said. “Nobody gave Blackburn Rovers a chance against Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend so we can take hope from that.
“I have also done reasonably well against Rangers in the past. I scored in a 1-1 draw at Ibrox with Motherwell, won and drew there with Hibs and even managed a 0-0 against them with Livi.”
