Dundee United winger Gary Mackay-Steven has capped a superb first season at Tannadice by being called up by Team GB for the Olympics.
The 21-year-old, who was in Bulgaria on Thursday for Scotland Under 21s in a European qualifier, has received another international honour by being shortlisted in the provisional group of players for the London games.
The Great Britain side, managed by Stuart Pearce, kick off their Group A campaign at Wembley against Senegal on July 26, before facing the United Arab Emirates (July 29 at Wembley) and Uruguay (August 1 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff).
The recognition is well deserved for a player whose skill has lit up the SPL.
Mackay-Steven, who was born in Thurso, joined the Tangerines from Airdrie United last summer in a bid to boost an injury-affected career that had at one time seen him join Premiership giants Liverpool at youth level.
United officials are understandably delighted to have one of their brightest young talents honoured at Olympic level but the timing of the tournament throws up a quandary for them.
Team GB’s last group game against Uruguay is on August 1 and that is just a day before the Tangerines will play the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie, with the return a week later on August 9.
Therefore, it is fair to assume that United will want Mackay-Steven with them when they enter continental competition and will now assess their options.
