John Baird could be a lucky omen for Dundee

Dundee striker John Baird is hoping to secure an unexpected promotion bonus for the second time.

Baird, who has just joined the Dark Blues from Raith Rovers, is hoping his new team strike the SPL jackpot by getting voted into that division in place of the old Rangers.

The Dens men look likely to have to wait until Monday to find out their fate. That is when the SPL hold their annual meeting and it is at that gathering that the top-flight clubs are poised to formally invite them to fill the vacancy left by the stricken Ibrox side.

If, as expected, the news is good for Dundee it will be case of deja vu for the frontman.

Baird was part of the Airdrie United side which won promotion to the First Division in 2009 after Livingston were demoted to the Third Division as punishment for entering administration.

”It was unbelievable back then as well and there are definitely similarities to what is happening now,” said Baird.

”One minute we were preparing for life in the Second Division and then the next we were being promoted to the First Division just a few days before the new season started.

”So I have been through it all before and you can obviously imagine the excitement when something like that happens.

”There has been so much uncertainty with the fans asking us what is happening, but the truth is we still don’t know.

”We just have to keep our heads down and carry on as normal as possible for the time being.”

The Dark Blues have set themselves up at a training base in Lancaster and have been preparing for Wednesday’s friendly against Kendal Town.

Baird revealed that it has been a relief to get out of Scotland even for a short spell as the Rangers crisis rumbles on.

”To have come down to England for a few days has definitely helped to get away from it all,” he said.

With the Dundee squad in the north of England is 24-year-old central defender Adam Watts, who counts Fulham, MK Dons, Northampton and Lincoln among his former clubs.

Manager Barry Smith confirmed: ”Adam was recommended to me so I decided to take a look at him while we were down here.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Mark Fotheringham, who left Dundee at the end of last season, is on the verge of sealing a move to Germany.

He has been on trial at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim and has impressed manager Markus Babbel.
