Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has admitted he is relishing the prospect of local derbies this season with the Dark Blues.
The Tangerines will renew their league rivalry with near neighbours Dundee following the decision at the SPL AGM to invite Barry Smith’s side to replace Rangers in the top flight.
More than 10,000 fans flocked to Dens Park on Saturday for the friendly derby between the sides and Thompson believes that bumper attendance shows there are reasons to be cheerful amid all the doom and gloom surrounding the game in this country.
He said: ”The decision is great news for Dundee Football Club. I think the turnout at the friendly derby at the weekend showed exactly what these matches mean to the fans. It proved that there is still life in football outside of everything else that has happened.
”We can now look forward to meaningful derbies with Dundee once again this season. It is all about bragging rights for the fans but it’s points that matter most to me as a chairman.
”At the end of the day, we are running a business. There has been a lot of talk about sporting integrity but we need the fans to fully back the club.”
