Dundee 1 Partick 0: Dark Blues into top six with last-gasp win
ByCraig Smith
Dundee broke into the Premiership’s top six as a late winner by Paul McGowan sunk Partick Thistle at Dens Park.
With St Johnstone losing at home to Celtic earlier in the day, the Dark Blues knew that a draw would have been good enough to take them above their Tayside rivals in the standings albeit Saints have a game in hand.
But Paul Hartley’s men managed all three points as McGowan struck with seconds left on the clock.
Dundee made four changes from the side that lost to Celtic in the Scottish Cup, with new signing Paul Heffernan handed a debut in the absence of the suspended Greg Stewart.
Thistle probably had the better of the first period, with Lyle Taylor dragging a shot wide early on, but Dundee’s Alex Harris forced keeper Scott Fox into a superb diving save from a free-kick as the half drew to a close.
The hosts probably shaded the second half on balance and it looked as though neither side were going to make the breakthrough.
But McGowan was the man on hand to tap home in the 90th minute after great work by sub Gary Harkins down the left.
