Rab Douglas believes Dundee and Harkins are a perfect match

Former Dens goalkeeper Rab Douglas expects Harkins to settle in quickly.

Dundee and Gary Harkins are a perfect fit for each other.

That’s the view of Dark Blues legend Rab Douglas, who expects his former team-mate to make a big impact in his third spell at Dens Park.

Harkins signed a two-year deal with Paul Hartley’s men on Monday following his departure from St Mirren, and Douglas doesn’t believe the return is a gamble for either player or club.

“Gary going back is great news for Dundee,” he insisted. “He’ll feel loved again which is the big thing as far as getting the best out of him is concerned.

“He’s just that kind of player, the type who needs to feel as though he’s really wanted.

“Gary has floated about a bit in the past couple of seasons, which isn’t ideal for any player, but now he’s back at a club where he has a special affinity and that can only be good for him.

“I think everyone knows his affection for Dundee. It’s important that he feels settled again, which I’m sure he will be in virtually no time.

“So that should be reflected in his performances on the pitch when the new season gets under way.”

Douglas played alongside midfielder Harkins in 2010 when they helped them overcome a 25-point deduction to stay in the old First Division.

The former Celtic and Scotland keeper believes Harkins has the potential to be a star turn in the Premiership as the Dark Blues prepare for their top flight return.

Douglas said: “Gary’s got all the ability in the world. He can also play a number of positions, so his versatility will be good for Paul Hartley.

“He’s been through some tough times at Dens as well, which brings you closer to the supporters. I would expect him to do well and bring out the best in other players around him.”
