Daryll Meggatt insists he’s ready to become a Dundee mainstay as the season kick-off draws near.
The 24-year-old defender is relishing his move from part-time football with Alloa to the Scottish top flight and is vying for a starting slot in next weekend’s league curtain-raiser away to Kilmarnock.
Meggatt, who’s preparing to face Gary Caldwell’s Wigan in tomorrow night’s friendly at Dens, said: “I’m loving it.
“The first day is getting closer and hopefully I’ve done enough to get into that starting line-up for the Kilmarnock game.
“I think I’ve done quite well up until now.
“It was hard hard to begin with training every day on the legs but you do grow into it.
“It’s all about getting into the manager’s thoughts and staying there once you get the chance.
“The competition is stiff but that’s what’s driving me on.
“I can play left-back or left centre-back so hopefully I have given the manager food for thought.”
Meggatt believes the Dark Blues’ team spirit can help them in their quest to improve on last season’s top six finish, after narrowly going down to Rotherham on Tuesday night.
He said: “We all get on like a house on fire. That’s half the battle.
“The dressing-room is bubbly and there are a few characters.
“But we’re all very focused on bringing success here and we know what we want when we go out onto the park.
“I travel to training with some experienced guys like Simon Ferry and James McPake so I’m learning all the time.”
