Top scorer Peter MacDonald turned out to be Dundee’s saviour once again on Saturday as he fired the Dark Blues back to the top of the Championship.
And even though there is still a long way to go and many twists and turns to come, MacDonald insists all the players at Dens Park should be thinking about now is staying there until the silverware is handed out.
MacDonald’s 10th league goal of the season proved decisive against Alloa at the weekend, and the three points lifted John Brown’s men back into pole position after Hamilton’s shock defeat away to Dumbarton.
Dundee have been there before this term only to be knocked off their lofty perch by a poor result, but MacDonald maintains lessons have been learned.
“We’re top of the league and it’s down to us now,” he said.
“We’re not looking towards anybody else we just need to continue winning and not losing.
“It is back into the grind, forget about Christmas and all that, we’re paid to play football and that’s what we’re concentrating on.
“This league is frightening. Every team can beat everybody and you see it all the time.
“But if we concentrate on ourselves and no one else, and just keep working hard, then things will hopefully fall into place.
“We don’t speak about the Hamilton result or other results after games.”
MacDonald’s strike at the weekend took his tally to 14 in all competitions this season, and his boss said after the Alloa game that the hitman should be looking to notch at least 15 to 20 goals, given his experience in the division.
The striker is taking each game at a time, though, and was delighted to get back on the scoresheet against a tough Alloa team.
He continued: “I thought first half we were excellent and if it wasn’t for a few great tackles we could have been two or three up.
“We know what Alloa are all about, they are very well organised and they play some decent football.”
Dundee welcome Dumbarton to Dens Park on Saturday and many pundits would no doubt fancy a home win, judging by the look of the Championship table.
However, the same could have been said when Cowdenbeath visited the City of Discovery recently, but Dundee ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline.
MacDonald was disappointed by that result and says the Dark Blues will be eager to build some momentum this weekend, although he reckons that game highlighted Cowdenbeath’s performance more than any deficiencies Dundee had that afternoon.
He said: “Cowdenbeath were excellent against us but the gaffer asked for a reaction against Alloa and we gave him a reaction.”
