Paul Hartley ready to make tough decisions to give Dundee a real chance in Premiership

Paul Hartley was jumping for joy on Saturday. But he is already back to work, planning how Dundee will answer the Premiership challenge.
Paul Hartley was jumping for joy on Saturday. But he is already back to work, planning how Dundee will answer the Premiership challenge.

Dundee boss Paul Hartley says he will have to carry out a ruthless rebuilding job if his side’s stay in the Premiership is to last more than just one season.

The Dark Blues, of course, clinched promotion from the Championship on Saturday at a sold-out Dens Park.

The fans may still be basking in the glory of that achievement, but the manager will be back at his desk today to plan for the new campaign in the top tier of Scottish football.

And he stressed tough decisions will have to be made with regard to the heroes in the squad who won the title to ensure Dundee do not become a “yo-yo” club.

Speaking on radio, he said: “We had the day off playing a round of golf with the directors and we had a good chat. I will be back in tomorrow and we will look at the budget and what we have to bring in.

“We need to be a team next season that challenges in terms of staying in the league. We need more quality of player coming into the club.

“It is a rebuilding job. We have to make sure we stay in the Premiership we don’t want to be a yo-yo club.”

The manager added: “Over the years, the club has suffered off the park but we think we have a bright future.

“So we have a lot of work to do and there will be a lot of movement in and out.

“Decisions will have to be made that people won’t like. It’s like any club, any summer players come and go.

“We do have some good players but it is important we add more quality.

“There are loads of changes I want to make and I am sure the board will be right behind me.

“There will be changes, that’s for sure.”

Hartley, who has been on scouting trips down south recently, will look to England to strengthen but is also on the search for hidden gems here.

He said: “I want to bring in experienced players and younger ones with potential.

“I look at United across the road and the laddie Andrew Robertson who came from Queen’s Park. There are players out there.

“It is up to me to identify them. I know the Scottish game well but we have to look further afield.”
